The Ideal Leather Sofas Explored
Leather sofas are quite an investment for your home and living room (or study, or bedroom...) so picking out the perfect sofa for you is a decision not to be taken lightly.
Leather sofas tend to be somewhat of a centrepiece in the living room. Of course they contend with dining tables and in some cases, televisions, but overall they draw the eye more dramatically than most other furnishings; unless you happen to have a Picasso on your wall.
Consider the function of the beloved leather sofas. They’re there for comfort, not just ornamentation. Think cuddles, think relaxing, think zoning out after a hard day with one of your all time favourite films, think giving up all notions of common decency and indulging with a takeaway and watching ‘Something’ Idol on a cosy Saturday... we all have our guilty pleasures!
So the first thing you need to ask yourself when looking to buy your leather sofas is ‘how many people are going to be sitting here at once?’ Do you have friends around often? Is it a family sofa? Are you looking for a more intimate ‘love seat’ style? (less threatening and more endearing than it may sound in today’s cynical society!).
You should also think about what your leather sofas are going to have to contend with. Do you have children and pets? Do you have clumsy housemates? Any careless friends we should know about? The amount of wear and tear (hopefully not tear) it’s likely to experience needs to be proportionate to the amount of care and maintenance you’re prepared to put in.
Next we come to the home’s layout. Now you know how many people you’ll want to seat in your leather sofas, you need to think about where they’ll fit. Considering that they’re usually quite large furniture items, it would be wise to take measurements. On occasion, rather than getting one large sofa, it’s much more prudent to pick out a couple of smaller ones, or maybe an armchair or two. Please also remember that it needs to be able to fit through your front door...
The leather sofa are unique compared to other designs as they’ll keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They also age to a certain degree, but this is generally considered to add character, unlike fabrics, which tend to fade over time. Nowadays, you can find leather sofas that are designed to look any way you prefer, from antique to pristine. The best thing about leather sofas may be the simple fact that if you care for them and keep them well maintained, they will last forever.
Finally, we come to the shape and the overall design. Sofas are generally used in one of two ways: for sitting, or for laying. There’s absolutely no shame in laying down on your sofa (some models are designed specifically as alternate beds!) so make sure that if this is your preference, pick out a model with low arms and loose malleable cushions to fit with your body. For a more structured approach, leather sofas with higher, upright backs and firm support will fit the bill perfectly.
