Japan's katana craftsmen of the 1600's produced the original Mokume gane metal for sword fittings. When sword use decreased in Japan, the artists changed their focus and discovered a fresh market for their talents in the decorative arts. ~ Improvements in weaponry destroyed the market place for katanas, and Mokume gane artists alternatively (used their work for decorative products such as jewelry. They created their unique metalwork by liquefying soft metallic elements, which would form liquid phase diffusion bonds. What this means is that the metal bonds together, but doesn’t entirely dissolve. The resulting patterns are striking.
