The Exquisite Handmade Jewelry Box

Since the beginning of time, man has always created things of beauty. One such creation is the complex designs that are evolved by piecing together slivers of different woods to make a handmade jewelry box. Precise cutting and gluing onto a surface is essential to get the entire box to look as one unit.

Also known as Moaragh, Marquetry is an evolution from the art of inlay. This form of wood based decoration first began with the Persian and Egyptian cultures primarily in their religious as well as royal decor. With time, this form of beautification found its way onto smaller surfaces such as that of Jewelry Boxes.

If you look closely you will see that a real Marquetry jewelry box has neither a drawing nor any color on it. Special hand tools are used to cut out lines that will be filled in with thin pieces of wood that have been sliced at precise angles from trees, with specific tools. Once the picture is complete, sandpaper is run over it and it is finished off with a round of polish.

Marquetry requires precision and this is achieved through several methods, of which the 'window' is the most popular. Openings are created in the image with a traditional knife that creates the space needed for the pieces of veneer. In order to get the accuracy required, the sheet from which the veneer is to be cut is placed on the carved bits and is sliced keeping grain and depth in mind.

Some forms of Marquetry use just two variations of wood to create seaweed, a scroll-like design. Foliate or Arabesque is a form where, besides a variety of woods, ivory too is used to create images of birds and butterflies. Yet another means exists that utilizes brass or tortoiseshell and this, known as “Boulle” or “Buhl” was made famous by Andre Charles Boulle.

Marquetry too has evolved and you will find several variations to the form. Khatamkari is a Persian adaptation of marquetry where surfaces are embellished with not just wood, but bone and metal as well, on a variety of surfaces. The smaller the surface, the higher the value of the art form and so jewelry boxes like this are truly one-of-a-kind.

Another style is wave marquetry where designs are abstract and fluid. Jewelry boxes will have designs made with veneers of Wenge, Lacewood and Tiger Maple as well as Bloodwood in some instances. This form is quite popular for a sophisticated look to jewelry boxes.

Hailed as painting in wood, marquetry draws parallel with piecing together a jigsaw puzzle. The work, time, and labor involved are extremely tedious but the final product leavesyou in awe. The money spent on a genuine piece of marquetry on a jewelry box will be worth the investment and can be preserved for a life time.
