Used Jewelry Boxes: Recycling and Putting Them to Use

Small jewelry boxes are generally thrown away once their contents have been removed. Pack rats however, will definitely keep these boxes in the hope of doing something useful with them some day. If you have nothing to do one day, then a recycling project with these boxes would help while away the time.

The little boxes with velvet or satin interiors that hold earrings or rings are the most useful. These can be reused in several ways. You can create a sewing kit with these boxes rather than spend money buying yourself a ready-made one.

Use a length of cardboard that will hold together three such small boxes. Place some hot glue on the board at regular intervals and press down the base of each of these boxes firmly making sure they are evenly apart. Use one box for pins and needles, another for spools of thread and the third for buttons. Place some glue on the lid of each box and stick on an object that matches its contents.

Get creative and make a small pattern with buttons on one lid, on another glue together some needles, and with the third, place a knot of multicolored threads. Empty bracelet boxes can be converted into spare key holders. Rather than throwing keys around the house, use a velvet lined bangle box to store them. The inner lid of the boxes can be decorated with keys you no longer use.

Wooden exteriors of boxes can have the shape of keys etched onto them. You could also draw out the shape of a key and then fill it with sequins. It's a simple way for you to spot your box in a drawer instantly. Drawers with stationery can get quite messy.

Old jewelry boxes can be used to help you organize things. Old cardboard jewelry boxes are best used for this project. Glue together a set of boxes on a strong and adequately sized cardboard base. Having boxes in the same color would be great.

Use thick ribbon on the lids of the boxes to label the contents. Staples, paper clips and thumb tacks can be neatly stored in these. Much in the same way, boxes can be used to organize tool kits. One set of boxes can be used to hold nails, screws, washers and even driver heads.
